The RCMP has recently charged a 20 year old man named Matthew Sweet-Grant after a deliberate attack on an 18 year old boy. The victim was passed out and was sleeping while the suspect poured liquid on his back and thew a match that started the fire. To add on to his, another 18 year old boy named Joshua McWhirter was filming while this was occurring. Police believe that this wasn’t the first time Sweet-Grant has lit someone on fire based on their investigation. Two Kelowna men, Matthew Sweet-Grant, 20, and Joshua McWhirter, 18, have been charged with aggravated assault and remain in custody.
This relates to Law 12 because of the severity of the crime. The accused are both being charged with aggravated assault which is defined as wounding, maiming, disfiguring, or endangering the life of the victim. Aggravated assault is an indictable and carries a maximum sentence of 14 years in prison. The two accused are currently in custody and remains innocent until proven guilty. Their court day will further determine their innocence and how much they must pay for it.
